"Get Your Kicks on Route 66"
A Southern Railway passenger train double headed by two Southern Railway PS-4 Class steam locomotives departs Atlanta's Peachtree Station headed northbound with the Southerner in the spring of 1930.
Peachtree Station was a suburban station stop for those passengers deciding not to board the train at downtown Atlanta's Terminal Station.
Peachtree Station is still used by Amtrak today.
A Southern Railway E-6 Diesel-Electric locomotive hurtles south towards Atlanta, Georgia with the Crescent in tow in the early fifties. A dramatic sunrise highlights the backdrop of distant South Carolina mountains.
This train is in the "run 8" throttle position which is the highest gear for a diesel, allowing it to maintain track speeds in excess of 120mph.
It is rare to see a pan shot of this type portrayed in railroad art.
A Central of Georgia freight train rumbles south near Albany, Georgia in the late forties. The gentleman in the rocking chair laments about the speed of the passing northbound Buick and the curve which lies just ahead of it. The distant thunderstorm adds a bit of excitement to the unfolding drama.
Red clay, kudzu, and watermelons are typical icons indiginous to this region as well as the distant house sitting on cinder blocks complete with a tin roof and a cotton field as a front yard.
A 1966 Corvette heads west on Route 66 in the year 66 racing the first locomotive, #66, in a four unit lash up of Alco PA diesel locomotives. A Phillips 66 gas station is in the background. The train is the Grand Canyon Limited.
The Grand Canyon Limited is running at "track speed" on the Arizona- New Mexico state line . The stainless steel panels on the locomotives and consist reflect the distant background.

Atlantic Coast Line's Champion "races" the Seaboard Air Line's Silver Meteor across the twin bridges spanning the Ogeechee River. This occurred every morning at sunrise around 6:45 a.m.
The two mainlines cross the river on parallel spans approximately 15 miles southeast of Savannah, Georgia. The Atlantic Coast Line crosses the river via a lift bridge whereas the Seaboard Airline utilizes a swing span rotating bridge.
This view is typical of the many inlets which both railroads crossed along the eastern seaboard of the United States.
The spectacular sight of a train on Horseshoe Curve, one of the engineering marvels of the railroad world, is captured by the brush strokes of the artist. On many occasions one could witness multiple trains at this location going eastbound and westbound at the same time!
The Pennsylvania Railroad had a 4-track mainline that stretched from New York City, New York to Chicago, Illinois, thus coining the phrase "broadway" hence the name of the railroad's flagship train, the Broadway Limited.
The mighty K-4 class Pacific steam locomotive was usually found on the head end of this premier passenger train. The Pennsylvania Railroad had a huge stable of this magnificent locomotive on its roster.
Mainline Memories Memories
Augusta's leading ladies show off their finery in downtown Augusta, Georgia's Union Station in the mid 1950's.
These streamlined trains are in town for the Masters Golf Tournament which is held every year in this east Georgia community. The president of each of these railroad companies would bring in their "own" train with which to impress and woo their top clients. This circumvented the need for accomodations as each train was considered a four-star hotel on wheels.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train charges west out of a spectacular sunrise as it crosses the northern tier of New Mexico.
This train is the modern-day version of the Super-C freight train of the 1970's and 80's. Carrying J.B. Hunt trailers in its consist, this hotshot train is allowed a top speed of 75mph on its cross-country journey from Corwith Yard in Chicago, Illinois to the Port of Long Beach in Los Angeles, California.
The ES-44 AC locomotives in charge of this train are the newer version of eco-friendly power plants used to power freights on the BNSF System.
The Super-C heads west into an Arizona sunset. This train was known as the "world's fastest freight train". Running at passenger train speeds from Chicago to New York, this was a premium train carrying UPS and USPS containers.
Things have since changed on this line which crosses the northern tier of New Mexico and Arizona. Long gone are the cabooses, canteliever-style signals, jointed rail, single TOFC flatcars as well as the Super-C itself. Sadly enough Route 66 no longer parallels the mainline. It has been replaced by Interstate 40.
Southern Pacific's AC Class-4 oil-burning locomotive charges out of a reverse curve at the base of Mount Shasta, California. In the train's consist are refrigerated cars with produce such as lettuce and grapes destined for eastern markets. This locomotive is unique due to the placement of the cab in front of the boiler rather than behind. This was a milestone in steam locomotive construction as it improved the visibility for the engineer and eliminated noxious fumes from entering the cab due to the numerous tunnels encountered on this mountainous line.
A Harley Davidson V-Rod motorcycle sits atop a hill near Hollywood, California. The skyline of Atlanta, Georgia is painted on the rear wheel as well as on the rear stabilizer bar.
This version of this hybrid is unique because of its all chrome construction complete with chrome accessories.
The shadow of a couple in a warm embrace highlights the immediate foreground.

A Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul & Pacific Railroad passenger train emerges out of a spring thunderstorm somewhere north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin as it charges north through a field of wood violets, the Wisconsin state flower.
The magnificent power for this run is #261,an S-2 class steam locomotive. This beauty was saved from the scrappers torch and is used in mainline excursion service today. However, it is now undergoing additional restoration.
This is a classic scene from the late 1940's complete with a classic wig-wag crossing signal and grain elevators, both relics of better days gone by.
"Atlantic Coast Line Memories"
The West Coast Champion, flagship train of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, passes the Florida Special in the middle of orange groves in Central Florida.
A thunderstorm is breaking up in the distance as the sun comes out to reveal the splendor of this tropical paradise.
The distant clouds form to reveal the image of the artist's grandfather in the sky watching over his beloved Atlantic Coast Line Railroad .
Seaboard Air Lines premier train, the Orange Blossom Special passes the railroad's flagship train, the Silver Meteor, near Wildwood, Florida in the late 50's.
This is a typical "dog day afternoon" as the sun is shining while it is raining.
The diesels pulling these trains were built by General Motor's locomotive subsidarary, Electro Motive, There were only a handful of these units built, and they were designated as E-4s. Each of these units had retractable nose doors, a rarity in diesels anywhere.
Double-headed " Challenger" steam locomotives roar past double - headed "Big Boy" class locomotives near Peterson, Utah in the spring of 1942.
Both trains are headed east carrying perishibles destined for eastern markets during a wartime economy.
This area is near Peterson, Utah located in the Morgan Valley and is known for its scenic beauty.
"Washington Terminal 1951"
The Pennsylvania Railroad's Congressional Limited races the Baltimore & Ohio's Diplomat out of Union Station located in downtown Washington D.C. circa 1951.
The early morning rush is almost over and the locomotives need to be serviced at the Ivy City Servicing Facility for their return trips.

"Encounter at Harpers Ferry"
Two of Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's massive EM-1 class steam locomotives emerge out of the tunnel located at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia in 1954. These articulated mallets were the largest and most powerful locomoitives on the roster of the railroad.
This location is known for its spectacular scenery with two converging rivers and the joining of three states.

For the first time ever, is a painting of a New York Central Niagra-class steam locomotive scooping up water "on the fly".
Water has reached the overflow capacity, and is exiting the tender by way of pipes which were located located at the bottom of and on either side of the tender. The overflow is splashing against the bulkhead of the first car in the consist.
The train is refilling its tender with water while maintaining a 55mph gait. Once past the purple standard which is the lampstand in front of and to the right of the charging locomotive, the fireman, hanging out of the cab behind the engineer will pull the pnuematic lever, which will raise the scoop. This flashing standard indicates to the engineer, that the end of the track pan is near.
These track pans were strategically placed at intervals between Chicago and New York to circumvent the need for thr train to stop to take on water which was needed for the operation of the engine.
